Footwork Drills for Speed and Balance

The following footwork drills will help you develop speed and the explosive energy required for the martial arts. Try adding them to your regular workout. You should start seeing results after about one month of working them on a regular basis. I would recommend that you work no more than three different ones in your daily workout. Mix them up and have fun with them.

Important: These drills are intended for use by students of Kantetsu Ryu Karate.  If you are a martial artist interested in increasing your speed and balance, ask your instructor for similar drills.

1.     Length of floor, step behind, reverse to work both sides back to the starting point.

2.    Length of floor, step behind, step forward, reverse to work both sides back to the starting point.

3.    Length of floor, step behind, pick leg up high, step drag. Reverse as above.

4.    Straddle run to objects in order, reverse and back.

5.     Rear knee length of floor.

6.     Front knee length of floor.

7.    Blitz and punch when objects are reached, run backward with guard defense.

8.    Serpentine between two rows of objects.

9.    Run straight forward, touch object, turn and run back to starting point, touch floor. Repeat for length of course and back.

10.    Same as #9, except run backwards to starting point.
